Day 1:
The Suffering Church and the Compromising Church Begin your journey in Izmir, where we’ll visit
Smyrna, known as “the suffering church.” Here, we reflect on the words from Revelation 2:10, “Do
not fear what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison, that you may
be tested, and you will face suffering for ten days.” Smyrna is also the home of the 2nd-century
Bishop Polycarp, who was martyred by being burned alive at the age of 85. We will then continue
on to Pergamum, the “compromising church,” described in Revelation 2:12-16 as “where Satan’s
throne is,” referencing the ancient altar of Zeus. After the tour, we’ll return to Izmir for dinner and
overnight accommodation.
Day 2:
The Adulterous Church, The Dead Church, and The Faithful Church Our journey continues with a
visit to Thyatira, known as “the adulterous church.” Revelation speaks of the church tolerating
false prophets, including Jezebel (Revelation 2:18-29). We’ll then proceed to Sardes, the “dead
church,” a place where Jesus declared, “I know your deeds, that you have a reputation of being
alive, but you are dead” (Revelation 3:1-6). Afterward, we’ll visit the “faithful church” of
Philadelphia. We’ll spend the night in Pamukkale.
Day 3:
Pamukkale and the Laodicean Church On this day, we’ll explore the natural beauty of Pamukkale
and visit Laodicea, known for its lukewarm faith. Revelation 3:15 says, “You are neither hot nor
cold,” a critique of the church’s complacency in blending pagan and Christian beliefs. After our
tour, we’ll transfer to Kusadasi for an overnight stay.
Day 4:
The Loveless Church, House of the Virgin Mary, and Church of St. John We will visit Ephesus, the
“loveless church,” which is the most prominent of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Ephesus is
also home to the House of the Virgin Mary, where she is said to have spent her final years. Finally,
we’ll visit the Basilica of St. John, also known as the Church of St. John the Theologian.
